Cabinet Knob Florentine Medallion Sleeping Lion

Collection Classica Europa

Sleeping lion cabinet knob

The Sleeping Lion in high relief on the oval: eyes closed, mane fallen, muzzle resting at the edge of the field. The cameo shape suits it like a profile portrait, nobility held within a frame that presents it without exposing it. The lion meant to be touched more than looked at, set at hand’s height.

The imprint of the hand
Our handles have imperfections. That's what we love : they're handmade, not machined. A shade that varies, a texture that's more pronounced, the trace of a gesture: none of this is an accident. No two pieces are quite alike, yours is like no other.

Installation instructions

Installation in minutes

Replacing an old handle? Unscrew the old one, screw in the new one. The included M4 x 25 mm screws are designed for fronts 18 to 19 mm thick; for a thinner or thicker front, a simple shorter or longer M4 screw does the job. No special tool, no drilling.

A new front to drill? A simple hole with a standard drill is enough. For a knob, one hole. For a pull, two holes at the indicated distances. The screw needs to go 4 to 8 mm into the handle: allow for the thickness of the front plus about 6 mm. The fixing is solid and permanent.

About this handle

The character of the design

Collection Classica Europa

From Florence to Vienna, from the Baroque to the Enlightenment: five centuries of European ornament distilled into a single collection. Scrollwork, mythological figures, generous curves and confident symmetries: the vocabulary of Europe’s grand houses, reinterpreted for furniture today. For interiors that aren’t afraid of character.

Florentine Medallion

An oval knob with the profile of a cameo: a domed field, a fine border that frames it, a curve that calls the hand. The Florentine Medallion descends from the Renaissance tondo and the medallions of paneled rooms: the noble shape of the emblem, brought down to furniture scale. Left bare, the material composes alone; ornamented, it becomes the exact setting of its pattern.

Sleeping Lion

Eyes closed, mane at rest, an expression somewhere between serenity and quiet nobility. The Sleeping Lion is a strong sculptural motif, yet a composed one: an assertive presence without ostentation. For interiors that want character without provocation.

The material

How our Bronze handles are made

Each piece is cold-cast from an extremely fine pure bronze powder blended with resin. This composite, uniting tradition and new technology, yields a material and sheen comparable to solid bronze, yet with sculpted detail finer than traditional foundry casting allows, resulting in an object that is lighter, more precise, and of unmatched quality.

What it works on

In harmony with your door or drawer front

Submerged Bronze, a mineral pastel for soft fronts

It’s made for light, matte interiors: limewash white, sand, linen, light wood or whitewashed wood, where it blends in like a pebble in the light. On a sage green, eucalyptus, or blue-gray front, in tone-on-tone, the pairing is botanical and deeply calming. It holds up surprisingly well against matte black or deep blue, where its paleness turns precious, almost like an excavated jewel in its case. It fades on red woods and saturated warm tones, terracotta or mahogany, which turn it gray.

From the same collection

A guardian who sleeps, but remains a guardian

The closed eyes of a lion that still stands guard

The Florentine Medallion descends from the Renaissance tondo and from carved wood medallions: an oval, convex field, encircled by a fillet that holds it like a frame, the noble shape of the emblem brought down to the scale of furniture. Ornamented, it becomes the exact setting for its motif, and the sleeping lion rests there with a particular restraint: closed eyes, a settled mane, an expression between serenity and restrained nobility. It is a strong sculptural motif, but one that holds itself in check, a confident presence without ostentation, for interiors that want character without the provocation of an open mouth. On an armoire or a bookcase, this restraint changes how the piece functions in a home: it marks the front without ever dominating it, unlike more theatrical figures in the catalog. A single fixing point is enough, as with any knob, with no center-to-center spacing to plan for. Submerged Bronze wraps this relief in a patina born of two thousand years in the Mediterranean: powdery blue in the hollow of the mane, sea green on the muzzle and closed eyelids, edges veiled in white along the fillet that frames the medallion. The three sizes, S, M, and L, follow the width of the doors: the small suits a narrow linen cabinet, the large asserts its presence on a generously sized sideboard door, without ever losing the restraint that defines the motif.

A lion that guards tombs, not doors that get forced open

The lion with open eyes and gaping jaws belongs to a well-identified tradition, that of threshold guardians, carved to warn anyone crossing a door or a gate that they are being watched. The sleeping lion comes from a different tradition, closer to funerary sculpture and the recumbent effigies that watched over tombs in medieval churches and cloisters: there, closed eyes did not signify an absence of vigilance but an eternal rest, a watch no longer kept through threat but through presence alone. This double origin explains why the two motifs, both lions all the same, produce such different effects once placed on a piece of furniture: one suits an entry door or a piece meant to look imposing from across a room, the other a more intimate piece, a bedroom bookcase or a country house armoire, where character is wanted without dominating the space. On an old family piece, which often already carries its own history, the sleeping lion sits particularly well with this idea of a silent watch passed down from one generation to the next, rather than with that of a confrontational figure. It is a nuance that does not read immediately in the motif itself, but that clarifies why two lions so similar in appearance find their place in very different rooms of the house.

Only one guardian per storage piece

As with any animal figure in the catalog, we recommend reserving this sleeping lion for a single front per piece of furniture, generally the center door of an armoire or the most visible door of a bookcase, and letting the other doors and drawers carry more neutral motifs. a square knob with a scrollwork pattern suits a neighboring drawer without competing with the lion's restraint, while a round knob with a shell accompanies an adjoining piece in the same room, and a plain slim bar is best kept for the most functional drawers. This hierarchy, a figure that stands guard and motifs that accompany it without competing, also applies to mounting height: center the medallion at two thirds of the door's height rather than at mid height, so it stays at eye level. A dry cloth after dusting is enough for upkeep, never any wax, which would fill in the white veil of the closed eyelids. On a bookcase with several low doors, it is best to keep this lion on the door closest to the room's entrance, the one seen first when pushing the door open, rather than on a corner door less exposed to view. A single lion per piece of furniture is enough to install this calm presence; placing two on the same front would weaken precisely the restraint that gives the motif its whole appeal.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about the handle Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion

Custom

Do You Offer Custom, Made-to-order Pieces?

Yes. Our handles are made to order in our Paris atelier, which gives us real latitude to go beyond the catalog. We range from custom color to raised initials or a logo, from an exclusive pattern to a numbered series. Custom work remains a separate service, on top of the catalog, priced according to your project. Every request gets its own dedicated quote, which we put together as quickly as possible after your message.

Can I Have My Initials or a Logo Added?

Yes. Initials, a monogram, or a logo are designed into the handle's pattern and then added in relief: they're sculpted onto the master, captured in the mold, and cast with the piece. Nothing is engraved afterward, the relief is one with the handle. The modeling work and mold making are priced in the quote.

IKEA, Plum, and Superfront compatibility

What if My IKEA Front Is Already Drilled?

For a knob, the existing hole almost always works, it fits the M4 screw. For a pull, check that the gap between the holes matches an available center-to-center. If in doubt, measure center to center and send us the measurement, we'll confirm the right piece for you.

And with Plum, Superfront, Reform, or A.S. Helsingö Fronts?

Yes, in the same way. These brands design their fronts to IKEA Metod's dimensions and drilling: Plum, Superfront, Reform, A.S. Helsingö, Holte, and the other workshops making fronts for IKEA cabinets. Installation is identical, free-choice drilling and M4 screws.

How Does This Knob Attach to IKEA Furniture?

One hole, one M4 screw: it's the simplest install there is. Drill at the spot you want on your IKEA front (Metod, Malm, Kallax, Hemnes) and screw it in. No center-to-center to measure, since a knob only has one mounting point.

Is Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion Compatible with IKEA Furniture?

Yes. IKEA Metod, Pax, and Besta fronts are factory drilled for hinges and drawers, but never for handles: you choose the placement, drill, then fasten with an M4 screw, exactly like an original IKEA handle. Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion follows this standard, like all our pieces.

Installation

Are the Screws Provided with Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion?

Yes, always. You receive stainless steel M4 x 25 mm screws, designed for fronts 18 to 19 mm thick, along with installation instructions. They hold up to the humidity of a kitchen or bathroom. For a different thickness, no problem: a shorter or longer standard M4 screw does the job, sold at any hardware store or sent to you on request.

What Front Thickness Can Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion Go Through?

All of them. The included screw, an M4 x 25 mm, is designed for fronts 18 to 19 mm thick, but the handle installs on any thickness: all you need is an M4 screw of the right length. Allow for the thickness of the front plus about 6 mm, for example an M4 x 16 for a 10 mm front, an M4 x 35 for a solid door or a 30 mm doubled front. These are standard screws, sold at any hardware store, and we'll send them to you on request.

What Tools Do I Need?

A drill or driver with a bit suited to your door or drawer front, and a Phillips screwdriver. No specialized tools required. On a thin front, a hand screwdriver is often enough, without even reaching for the drill if the hole already exists.

How Does Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion Attach to My Cabinet Front?

One hole, one M4 screw: it's the simplest mounting there is. You mark the spot, drill, then screw Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion in from the inside of the front. There's no center-to-center to measure, since a knob has only one fixing point, making it compatible with almost any existing drilling.

How Do I Install Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion?

Installation is the same as any cabinet handle: drill the front, secure with the included screws, hand tighten, then finish with a final turn of the screwdriver. It takes just a few minutes per piece. Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion fits existing furniture as easily as IKEA fronts, and the installation guide is included in the package.

Fabrication and Ecology

Are the Handles Really Made in France?

Yes. 3D printing the master, molding, casting, sanding, and patina: it all happens in our Paris workshop. Our metal powders and resins come from European suppliers, and both assembly and finishing stay French. Every piece is checked by eye in our workshop before it ships.

Do Your Handles Contain Lead or Other Heavy Metals?

No. Our metal handles are cast from bronze, copper, brass, or pure aluminum powders, with no added lead, no cadmium, and no mercury. The materials used comply with European RoHS directives restricting hazardous substances. You can install them in a kitchen, a child's room, or a bathroom with no risk of toxic migration.

Product and Material

Tenure and Aging

Will the Submerged Bronze Finish Darken or Patina over Time?

Yes, and it's by design. The Submerged Bronze finish is a living patina: it keeps evolving gently with time and light, gaining depth, which makes each handle a little unique. A soft cloth is enough for everyday care, no abrasive products needed. And if you'd rather lock in its current look, a colorless microcrystalline wax noticeably slows the evolution.

Are Screws and Instructions Included with Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion?

Yes, always: stainless steel M4 x 25 mm screws, designed for fronts 18 to 19 mm thick, and installation instructions. Is your front thinner or thicker? The handle installs just as easily: all you need is a standard M4 screw of the right length, sold at any hardware store, and we'll send it to you free of charge on request.

Will the Finish of Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion Change over Time?

It all depends on the finish. Patinated finishes, like Antique Bronze or Antique Copper, are alive: they keep evolving gently, and that's their whole appeal. Matte, glossy, or color finishes, like Matte Bronze, are stabilized by their surface treatment and stay put. Either way, no bad surprises: a patina won't turn green, a stable finish stays exactly as it was. And if you ever want to refresh or change a patina, we'll take the piece back into the workshop.

Does Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion Work in a Kitchen or Bathroom?

For metal finishes (bronze, copper, brass, aluminum), yes to both: they hold up very well against household moisture and splashes. Bioresin, on the other hand, is best kept to dry rooms. The one real contraindication, for every material, is outdoor use exposed to the elements.

Is Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion Sturdy?

Yes, for everyday use: kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, office. Cast in metal, the material doesn't warp, doesn't break under normal pulling, and withstands everyday knocks. We archive the 3D model of every piece: even years from now, we can remake one identically.

Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion in Bronze, Is It Real Metal?

Yes, at 80%. Bronze: our pieces are cold cast from 80% pure metal powder, in a mold taken from a master we 3D print at the atelier in Paris. The shine, the weight in hand, the feel of the material: everything behaves like solid metal, with a level of detail traditional casting can't achieve. Each piece is then sanded and finished by hand, patinated for the noble metals, brushed for aluminum.

Frequently asked questions

Visual accuracy

Will My Submerged Bronze Handle Be Exactly Like the Visuals?

Very close, without being identical down to the last detail, and that's the nature of a hand-applied patina. Our visuals are computer-generated images calculated from the exact 3D model of the piece: the proportions, the relief of the decoration, and the dimensions are therefore perfectly faithful. What no image can reproduce is the hand: on a Submerged Bronze finish, the patina settles into the recesses and lightens the raised areas slightly differently on each piece. Two pieces of the same reference are in harmony, never strictly identical twins, and that is what we are after. If you want a perfectly uniform tone from one handle to the next, choose a matte or satin finish, which is stabilized.

Maintenance

Can Dishwashers or Steam-exposed Cabinets Be Paired with Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion?

Yes for metal finishes (bronze, copper, brass, aluminum), which handle household steam very well. Bioresin, more sensitive to prolonged moisture, should be avoided in these situations. On a built-in dishwasher, choose a metal material and wipe the piece down after high-temperature cycles. That is the only thing to remember for a front exposed to steam.

How to Care for Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion Every Day

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough in most cases. For a kitchen handle exposed to greasy buildup, add a drop of mild soap, liquid Marseille soap or diluted dish soap. Then wipe with a dry cloth to avoid streaks. That's all it takes day to day: no specialty product, no complicated routine.

How to Care for Florentine Medallion, Sleeping Lion in Bronze?

Bronze, copper, and brass handle mild cleaners well and keep their patina thanks to the protective treatment applied in our atelier. A soft, damp cloth with a drop of mild soap covers everyday care, then a dry cloth to bring back the shine. Save diluted vinegar for occasional limescale spots only, never for routine cleaning. These patinated metals only get better with light, regular care.

Does My Handle Care Depend on the Material?

Yes, on one key point. Metal finishes (bronze, copper, brass, aluminum) tolerate mild cleaners, a bit of diluted vinegar, and even household steam. Bioresin, on the other hand, should only be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap, no alcohol, no solvent, no concentrated vinegar. Day to day care stays simple either way, it's mainly the list of products to avoid that differs. Each product page specifies the exact care for its material.
