The character
The cylinder leaves the plane. Where most handles sit within the thickness of the door, a shape laid onto a surface, the cylinder projects outward: it’s a mass that comes toward you, that you take in a full grip, that your eye has to travel around. It’s the most volumetric silhouette in the catalog, the one that returns the handle to the status of a sculptural object.
Volume first
On a cylindrical handle, depth makes all the difference. The diameter can stay modest (slim 20 mm knobs), but the relief immediately creates a strong presence. Set on a flat door, it becomes the central visual detail; lined up in a series along a long piece of furniture, it draws a rhythmic score.
A firm grip
The cylinder is made to be grabbed with a full hand. There’s no doubt about the gesture, you pull or you turn, and the hand meets a form it can grip without slipping. This matters on furniture built for heavy use (kitchens, workshops, professional spaces) and on heavy doors (full height, thick fronts).
One volume, many languages
The cylinder is one of the oldest and most universal forms. Before it was a handle, it was a column: the shaft that carries ancient temples, which the Renaissance straightens and then covers in ornament. It’s also the cylindrical mass of modern designer furniture, the bare, forthright standard that a Perriand, a Jeanneret, or a Prouvé sets on a cabinet. And it’s still the barely dressed log of rougher, more rustic vocabularies. The same form carries all these languages: left bare, fluted, or laden with scrollwork, the cylinder turns industrial, classical, or raw. Origin
A story, a memory
The cylinder is first a column. Long before becoming a handle, the cylindrical shaft was the element that bore weight and ordered architecture, from the Greek temple to the Florentine cloister, where the Renaissance stood it upright and dressed it in scrollwork. The form arrives, then, carrying a memory that spans several millennia.
As a handle, the cylinder gained popularity in nineteenth century furniture: large knobs in porcelain, solid bronze, turned wood, utilitarian at first, then meaningful. The modern movement (Bauhaus, UAM, postwar Swiss design) made it a staple of designer furniture: Charlotte Perriand rendered it in wood on her cabinets, Pierre Jeanneret set it on the Chandigarh chests of drawers.
Today, the cylinder marks classic interiors as readily as architects’ lofts: depending on how it is treated, it evokes the ornamented column or the modern sculptural standard.
