The character
A decorative knob does not merely dress a piece of furniture: it becomes its subject. Where geometric shapes (round, square, rectangular) let the front do the talking, decorative cabinet hardware speaks up. Its outline is not a contour: it is a sculpture at hand height.
Two families: ornament and figure
Decorative hardware speaks two languages. Ornament first: acanthus scrolls, rinceaux, arabesques, the vocabulary ornament makers have unrolled since the Renaissance, where the curve itself is the motif. Then the figure: torsos, masks, mascarons, the lineage of door knockers and furniture bronzes, where the handle becomes a character. Both share the same gesture: deep relief, sculpted to be seen as much as held.
The piece that signs the furniture
Decorative pulls are not multiplied, they are placed. An entry sideboard, a display cabinet door, the central drawer of a dresser: one or two strong pieces on a sober set are enough to change the status of the furniture. It is the principle of jewelry: rare, well placed, looked at.
Relief works the light
More than any other shape, decorative hardware lives on its material. Hollows hold the patina, edges catch the light, and the piece changes with the hour. In patinated bronze it feels antique; in deep lacquer it turns contemporary without losing its story.

Origin
A story, a memory
Decorative hardware descends from French furniture bronzes: pulls, escutcheons and espagnolettes that eighteenth-century bronze masters such as Caffieri and Gouthière chased like jewelry. Ornament preceded function: sculpted first, mounted after. Mascaron door knockers, the ornate hardware of commodes and paneling cartouches belong to the same lineage.
The nineteenth century democratized the vocabulary through ornamental casting, then the twentieth put it to rest in favor of the pure line. It returns today through furniture with character: on a sober front, a single sculpted piece is enough to tell a story.
