Cabinet Handle Care for Your Holdon Pieces
Frequently asked questions
Caring for your cabinet handles
Maintenance
How can I help you clean and maintain your Holdon handles day to day?
A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough in most cases. For a kitchen handle exposed to greasy buildup, add a drop of mild soap, liquid Marseille soap or diluted dish soap. Then wipe with a dry cloth to avoid streaks. That's all it takes day to day: no specialty product, no complicated routine.
What products can I use to care for my Holdon handles?
Stick to mild products: Marseille soap, white vinegar well diluted (one part to ten parts water), neutral household cleaners. Absolutely avoid: abrasive sponges, strong acids like concentrated limescale removers or bleach, and specialty copper or silver cleaners, which attack the finish and the patina. If you're unsure about a product, test it first on a discreet spot. Gentle, regular cleaning always beats an aggressive scrub once in a while.
How to remove a stubborn stain from a Holdon handle?
For a stubborn limescale or grease mark, apply diluted white vinegar with a cotton swab to the spot, let it sit for about thirty seconds, then rinse. For a paint or glue stain, a bit of rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth, without hard rubbing. Always test first on a discreet spot before treating the visible part. Work in small touches rather than heavy scrubbing: patience protects the finish.
Does My Handle Care Depend on the Material?
Yes, on one key point. Metal finishes (bronze, copper, brass, aluminum) tolerate mild cleaners, a bit of diluted vinegar, and even household steam. Bioresin, on the other hand, should only be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap, no alcohol, no solvent, no concentrated vinegar. Day to day care stays simple either way, it's mainly the list of products to avoid that differs. Each product page specifies the exact care for its material.
Can cabinet handles be repatinated a few years down the line?
Yes, and that's one of the benefits of a piece that's cold cast and then hand patinated. If the patina has dulled, or if you'd like to change finish, say switching from Matte Bronze to Antique Bronze, we take the piece back into the atelier. We strip it, repatina it, and reprotect it before sending it back to you like new. Write to us to arrange the return, and we'll send you a quote.
Can we polish a Holdon handle to bring back its shine?
On metal finishes (bronze, copper, brass, aluminum), yes: a soft, dry cloth in light circular motions brings back the shine for everyday care. To go further, apply a thin coat of metal protective wax, an antique wax type, then buff once dry. On bioresin, however, polishing is not recommended: the surface is intentionally matte, and abrasive rubbing damages the original finish. Avoid on every material: harsh polishing compounds and abrasive products, which strip the patina and expose the bare metal.
Do Holdon handles hold up to heat?
Yes, up to about 80°C (176°F) in continuous use, which covers every normal household situation: a kitchen, a cooktop nearby, a cabinet front near an oven. Just avoid direct, prolonged contact with a very intense heat source. In a standard kitchen, no special precautions are needed. The material does not warp at the temperatures you would encounter day to day.
Do UV rays and sunlight damage Holdon handles?
Yes, the protective treatment applied in our workshop includes a UV filter. For truly exposed use, shutters or a south-facing door in direct sun all day, we recommend metal finishes, which hold up better than colors over the very long term. Indoors, even in front of a bright window, you have nothing to worry about. Everyday sunlight will not affect the finish.
Can pets or moisture near the dishwasher damage a Holdon handle, or can it be installed on a dishwasher or a piece of furniture exposed to steam?
Yes for metal finishes (bronze, copper, brass, aluminum), which handle household steam very well. Bioresin, more sensitive to prolonged moisture, should be avoided in these situations. On a built-in dishwasher, choose a metal material and wipe the piece down after high-temperature cycles. That is the only thing to remember for a front exposed to steam.
Can the Holdon Handles Go in the Dishwasher for a Thorough Cleaning?
No, never. The high heat, harsh alkaline detergents, and long humid cycles of a dishwasher damage the protective treatment applied in our atelier and can dull the patina or even lift a colored finish. If you remove your handles for a deep clean, renovation, or move, do it by hand: a damp cloth, mild soap, then dry immediately and air dry before reinstalling. A careful hand wash gives a far better result, with no risk to the piece.
How do I remove fingerprint marks from a Holdon handle?
Fingerprints come off with a simple wipe of a soft, barely dampened cloth, followed by a dry cloth for shine. On a light or bright metal finish, they show more: a light, regular buffing with a dry cloth is enough to make them fade with use. No need for a dedicated fingerprint product, they're often too harsh for the patina. If marks come back quickly in the kitchen, it's ambient grease film: a drop of mild soap in water solves it.
How to treat water spots and limescale on a Holdon handle?
Dry the piece after prolonged contact with water, that's what keeps water spots from forming, especially in the bathroom. For limescale buildup that's already formed, apply diluted white vinegar with a cotton swab to just the affected spot, let it sit a few seconds, then rinse and dry. Never submerge the handle and never let vinegar sit on the whole surface, it's only meant for a precise spot. On bioresin, stick to mild soap and avoid vinegar, even diluted.
Delivery, Customs, Payment, and Support
How Long Will It Take to Receive My Handles?
Each handle is made to order in our Paris atelier. Allow an average of 5 to 10 business days for production, plus the carrier's delivery time, which varies by address. You'll receive an email with the tracking number as soon as the shipping label is issued, generally between the 5th and 10th business day after your order.
Are Your Payment Methods Secure? What Payment Options Do You Offer?
We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) via Stripe, as well as PayPal. Transactions run through these two international references in online payment: Holdon Paris never sees and never stores your card number, all sensitive data is transmitted encrypted to the platform. The site runs entirely on HTTPS. For large professional orders, bank transfer with a deposit is possible (see architects and professionals).
Can I Return My Order if I Don't Like It?
Yes. French law gives you 14 days from receipt to exercise your right of withdrawal, with no need to justify it. The handles must be returned in their original condition, uninstalled, and return shipping is at your expense unless the error is ours: the refund is issued within 14 days of receipt at our workshop. To start a return, write to us via contact Holdon Paris: we'll send you the address and the process. Custom and personalized pieces are not eligible for the right of withdrawal, since they are made specifically for you.
