The character
The rectangle is the shape that commits to a direction. Where the square stays neutral and the round offers nothing, the rectangle says: here is how you hold me, here is the axis I draw. On a large cabinet door, a rectangular handle becomes a taut line that gives rhythm to the front.
Horizontality as a design choice
A horizontal rectangular handle spans part of the door’s width. It draws on workshop cabinet pulls, the industrial pulls of professional kitchens, the hardware of antique bars: this is a shape that extends the gesture, inviting you to pull rather than grasp. On large kitchen drawers or tall closet doors, it marks the furniture’s visual center of gravity.
A shape that structures furniture
The rectangle is not neutral: it imposes a reading. This proves valuable on very large fronts (kitchens with full-height doors, storage cabinets), where the absence of a focal point can read as a monolith. The rectangular handle breaks up that blocky effect without scattering the eye’s attention.
Variations in proportion
The elongation ranges from a 2:1 ratio (short and stocky, almost square) to an 8:1 ratio (very elongated, nearly a bar). The more elongated the rectangle, the more it becomes a gesture of pulling; the more compact it is, the more it keeps the character of a fixture and a handle. Origin
A story, a memory
The horizontal rectangle traces its roots to nineteenth century industrial furniture: workshops, the kitchens of grand houses, laundries, where function came first. It became the reference for professional kitchens, then for modernist furniture (the Bauhaus worked extensively with the bar as a pull), and it took hold in contemporary residential design through Scandinavian and North American brands.
Today it’s the most recognized silhouette in modern kitchens, to the point of serving as an almost implicit standard. Holdon offers several variations on it, so as not to fall into the generic.

Where this shape works
The rectangle works especially well on large pieces: full-height kitchens, walk-in closets, bookcases, long sideboards. It structures the piece and makes handling easier when you need to pull a heavy door or a large-capacity drawer.
Use sparingly on smaller pieces: a standard dresser with 40 cm drawers can take a short rectangle (12 to 15 cm); below that, it looks squashed and loses its appeal. For smaller fronts, the round or the square is a better fit.
