The character
The figurative is a silhouette that commits to a bold stance: the handle is no longer a discreet detail, it becomes a character. Lion’s head, Greek mask, mythological figure, stylized animal, each figurative silhouette tells a story, summons an imagination, opens a narrative.
A deeply European tradition
The figurative draws on a very old tradition of European furniture. Renaissance fittings, Louis XIV bronzes, and Empire ornaments are steeped in it: lions, sphinxes, masks, putti, horse heads. The figurative handle is not a whim: it is the legacy of a culture that long conceived of furniture as visual storytelling, every detail carrying a meaning, a reference, a stance.
An unapologetic presence
On a front, a figurative handle does not hide. It speaks, and the visitor notices right away. This is precious on pieces you want to give a strong character to: a cabinet, a display case, a writing desk, an interior entry door. Use it sparingly on everyday furniture: a whole kitchen of lion heads can become heavy, unless that is precisely the point.

Origin
A story, a memory
The figurative handle is as old as fine furniture itself. Ancient bronzes (Egypt, Greece, Rome) already set animal heads and masks into locks and handles. The Italian Renaissance made it a major art form, Cellini, Sansovino, the Florentine workshops, and French Louis XIV to Louis XVI furniture carried it forward with gilt bronze ornaments (lion heads, sphinxes, putti). The Empire period drew on antique imagery across every fine piece of furniture.
The 20th century pushed the figurative aside in favor of the geometric. Holdon is rediscovering it, not as pastiche, but as an expressive path worth reopening in contemporary furniture.

The Palazzo Square, for instance, is a silhouette of the square shape. A single shape can therefore hold several silhouettes, spread across several collections.
